FUSING THE MUSE WITH THE BLUES AND WHATEVER ELSE IS AROUND

M. D. Friedman is a poet, teacher, musician, photographer, digital artist and web master from Lafayette, Colorado where he resides with his wife, Mariamne Engle Friedman. In the spring of 2006 he retired from teaching in the public education factories to pursue the creative arts. His fourth book of poetry, Where We Reach, was recently released and combines his poetry with his original photographs and his first atempt at digital art. M. D. didn't stop there. He likes to push the limit of what digital creation can do and combine it all into something new.

Well, what does it look to to combine poetry, music, digital art & photograhy with what the internet animation makes possible. Check out M. D.'s new "digital poems," and join us in a new community of digital dissenters at www.digitaldada.org.

Digital Poetry by M. D. Friedman,  A New Genre of Poetics

The Word" (2007) is the first digital poem  I ever created.   It's the dada fusion of all my creative pursuits at once.  It represents a new genre of poetics, fusing my experimental sound art, digital art, photography and animation with original spoken word poetry. This piece deals in a humorous way with the difficulty of expressing transformational experience in written language.

"Forever Trespass” (2007) is a digital poem exploring the question, "Does the poem own the poet or the poet own poem?" The sound art for this piece was constructed from the 2D (2 directional) poem, "Forever Trespass". The "normal" voice is reading the poem vertically (down the columns) and the "harmonized" voice is reading the same poem horizontally (across the rows). The video was made by animating my photographs and digital art and integrating it with the original sound art.

Original poetry, sound art, visual art, photography, and animation by M. D. Friedman highlight this ground breaking video short. This work showcases a growing mastery of M. D.'s combined talents to produce experimental, experiential, electronic literature fusing several multimedia elements into a new genre of poetics. Featuring state of the art 3D animation, "Know Where to Go Crazy" (2009) is a two voice poem with the second voice heard animated into the viewer's head.

If like this kind of thing, you may want to go toM. D.'s Lulu Store Front to download it for your i-Pod or Windows-based video player.

Or you may just want to enjoy some of his other recorded poetic works . See http://www.reverbnation.com/mdfriedman to sign up on M. D.'s email list, to download many of the audio files, view videos, the text or other information related to these tracks.

His art represents an evolution from capturing (through photography) the beautiful and peculiar in our world to expressing (through the digital manipulation) the beautiful and peculiar within oneself. The resulting works are sometimes startling, sometimes subtly intriguing, but all map the personal journey of the artist from photographer to poetographer, from collector to creator and from seeing to being. It is the artist's hope that the joy and self-discovery intrinsic to this work will be contagious to the viewer.

In Search of the Planetary Penis

As a young virgin
she leaped the flames naked
singeing herself down to precious skin.

Since then no mere man has been enough.
The earth needs her now,
her whirling dance, her rituals of love.

The first voice of clarity
cries from her heart,
rises in chants and ravings.

She craves the rippling muscles of the waves,
lives to heal wounds of sharp steel and cement,
quiet the screams of forest leveled by bulldozer.

She has been freed from the confusion of many,

Hey Cuz,
I'm listening to you sing and blow your brains out through your harp as I write this. It was awesome seeing you, if ever so briefly, in St. Lou.
What a nice site this is. I am excited as I walk through the door and hope to be able to explore all the rooms. Thanx for opening the door for all of us.
"Good Dog" made me sad - I felt like I was in the kitchen with you and Sister. But nothing's any good if it's not honest.
I miss you, Mark, but now I will feel as if I'm with you again. Love, Jules

Thanks so much for the welcome. I don't even know how to navigate this yet. For example, there were three different ways I could leave you a comment. Maybe you'll get this, maybe you won't...

how kind of you to welcome me. it is odd to be a member of anything. i thought a poet is always on the outside, or inside out. i hope i will figure out how to share my work.
as for now, it is a rainy afternoon. i made a fire in the old stove. soon, we will light the hanuhah oil lamp. may the light shine down on us all. breindie

I haven't been featured for just being myself in a long, long time, so thanks. I hope that some of the other folks online here will be inspired to purchase some of the titles from my press (help keep me off the street and out of trouble).

Thanks a million!

I love your community here. I've been doing the songwriting and micro-fiction thing for some time but it's got me itching to get back to my original love, poetry.
